When something electrical just isn't right

Electrical problems rarely announce themselves clearly. A light flickers, a breaker trips for no obvious reason, an outlet stops working in one room but not another. These symptoms can have simple causes — or they can point to something deeper in the wiring. Either way, the key is accurate diagnosis before any repair begins.

Sam's approach is methodical: test, trace, and verify before recommending any work. You'll know exactly what's wrong, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs before a single wire is touched.

Common troubleshooting calls

  • Flickering or dimming lights — Could be a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a failing fixture.
  • Breakers that keep tripping — Often caused by overloads, short circuits, or ground faults hiding in the wiring.
  • Dead outlets or switches — A broken device, a tripped GFCI upstream, or a loose wire in the circuit.
  • Buzzing or humming sounds — Usually a sign of a loose connection, a failing breaker, or an improperly rated dimmer.
  • Warm outlets or cover plates — A serious warning sign that indicates a wiring issue that needs immediate attention.
  • Random power loss in part of the home — Often traced to a shared neutral, a tripped GFCI, or a deteriorated connection.
  • Burning smell with no visible source — Could indicate overheating wiring inside a wall — never ignore this one.

Why Boise homes have unique troubleshooting needs

Many homes in the Treasure Valley were built during boom periods in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Each era had its own wiring methods, panel brands, and code standards. Sam has worked in thousands of these homes and can often narrow down the likely issue based on the home's age and neighborhood alone — before he even opens the panel.

Common valley-specific issues include backstabbed outlet connections that loosen over time, Federal Pacific panels with breakers that don't trip when they should, and aluminum wiring connections that need proper treatment to stay safe. Having an electrician who knows these patterns means faster diagnosis and fewer return visits.

Honest diagnosis, not unnecessary upselling

Some electricians treat every service call as an opportunity to sell a panel upgrade or a full rewire. We don't. If your problem is a loose wire nut in a junction box, we'll fix that — and charge accordingly. If it's something bigger, we'll explain why and give you options. You'll never be pressured into work you don't need.
