What is a dedicated circuit and why do you need one?
A dedicated circuit is a single electrical circuit that serves only one appliance or area. It has its own breaker in your panel and its own wiring all the way back. This matters because high-draw appliances — like refrigerators, microwaves, washers, dryers, and space heaters — can overload a shared circuit, causing tripped breakers or even fire hazards.
Many older Boise homes were built before today's electrical demands existed. Back then, a kitchen might share one or two circuits across everything. Today, code requires dedicated circuits for most major appliances, and adding them is one of the most practical upgrades you can make.
Common dedicated circuit installations
- Kitchen appliances — Refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and garbage disposal each need their own circuit.
- Washer & dryer — Proper 240V circuits for electric dryers and dedicated 120V for washers.
- Garage & workshop — Air compressors, welders, power tools, and workbench circuits.
- Home office — Dedicated circuits for computers, printers, and equipment that can't afford a power interruption.
- EV charger prep — Running the wiring and installing the right breaker for a Level 2 charger.
- Hot tub & spa — GFCI-protected, properly sized circuits with disconnect switches as required.
- Bathroom heaters & exhaust fans — Dedicated power for bathroom equipment that draws more than a shared circuit can handle.
How we approach the job
Every dedicated circuit starts at the panel. Sam will evaluate your panel's capacity, determine the right wire gauge and breaker size, and run the new circuit with clean, secure routing. In many Treasure Valley homes, panels are in garages, basements, or utility closets — Sam has worked with every configuration and knows the cleanest paths to route new wiring.
You'll get a clear quote before work begins, and the job site will be left cleaner than we found it.
Panel capacity in older Boise homes
Some homes in the valley still have 100-amp or even 60-amp panels. If your panel is running low on space or capacity, Sam will let you know honestly — and help you plan accordingly. Whether you need a sub-panel or a full panel upgrade down the road, we'll give you the information you need to make a smart decision.
